I absolutely adore these toys! Being a speech-language pathologist, I strongly believe that the more a toy encourages problem-solving and hands-on exploration, the better it is for children's development. I appreciate how these toys foster creativity without relying on an "on-off switch." It's genuinely challenging to find truly educational toys, which is precisely why I'm a massive advocate for Gourbear toys

I bought this little toy for my almost one year old! He gets bored easily in the vehicle and when I found this, I knew he’d love it. This toy has been a lifesaver on car rides. He gets really focused and loves playing with it. Something about all the little “cords” coming off!

I wasn’t sure how much my son would like this toy— but I bought it when he was 5 months old and at 8 months it is still one of his favorite toys! It’s easy for him to hold on to the rubber strands when he totes is around in his walker or while army crawling around his playpen. Both he and we love that aspect— as it is difficult to find a toy an 8 month old doesn’t drop every 2 minutes (and mommy and daddy have to constantly keep retrieving.

We love that this toy stimulates his mind and his curiosity and helps him to develop his coordination, fine motor skills, and learn about concepts such as cause and effect.

This toy is highly durable and we have not experienced any damage or breakage despite our son’s indelicate methods of play.

This has quickly become a household favorite for us!

Montessori Toys 101: Frequently Asked Questions

Find out everything you want to know about Montessori Toys

A toy is considered Montessori when it aligns with the principles of the Montessori method. These principles include promoting independence, fostering self-directed learning, encouraging exploration, being made of natural materials, and supporting a child's developmental needs at each stage.

Montessori toys are chosen based on the Montessori philosophy, which emphasizes hands-on learning, independence, and self-discovery. These toys are thoughtfully designed to stimulate a child's curiosity, creativity, and cognitive development, promoting a love for learning.

Whether Montessori toys are worth it depends on individual preferences and values. Many parents and educators find them valuable for their child's development and learning, emphasizing qualities like creativity, critical thinking, and self-reliance. However, other educational toys and materials can also be beneficial. Ultimately, the worth of Montessori toys comes down to how well they align with a child's interests and developmental needs.

Montessori toys may appear more expensive because they are often made of high-quality, natural materials such as wood, which can be costlier than plastic. Additionally, the craftsmanship and design that go into creating Montessori toys add to their price. However, investing in these toys can be seen as an investment in a child's development and learning.

Some must-have Montessori toys include:

  1. Wooden blocks for building and imaginative play.
  2. Sorting and stacking toys to develop fine motor skills.
  3. Sensory materials like sand, water, or playdough for exploration.
  4. Practical life toys such as child-sized brooms, kitchen tools, or gardening sets.
  5. Language and number materials like puzzles and counting beads.

To organize toys the Montessori way, consider the following tips:

  1. Keep toys on open shelves at a child's height for easy access.
  2. Rotate toys regularly to maintain interest and avoid overwhelming the child.
  3. Offer toys that encourage exploration and learning rather than those with a single purpose.
  4. Use baskets or trays to group toys by category or theme for easy identification and clean-up.
  5. Limit the number of toys available at a time to promote focus and reduce clutter.

Montessori toys are designed to support a child's natural development and encourage independent learning. They emphasize hands-on exploration, problem-solving, and creativity. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to what makes a toy "better," many parents and educators find Montessori toys beneficial because they foster critical thinking, promote concentration, and encourage self-directed play.

Montessori toys are often made of wood because wood is a natural and sensory-rich material. It provides a pleasing tactile experience and allows children to connect with nature. Wood is also durable, safe, and free from harmful chemicals found in some plastic toys. This simplicity and focus on natural materials align with the Montessori philosophy, encouraging open-ended and imaginative play.
